The Jewish cemetery in Szczuczyn has been marked out. Since 2024, the cemetery has been owned by the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland (FODŻ).
In July 2025, the Foundation has put up stone markers with the Star of David and the inscription “Jewish Cemetery” in Hebrew, Polish, and English around the cemetery perimeter. At the entrance, it has placed plaques with information about the history of the cemetery and the local Jewish community.
Dense bushes and shrubbery had been cut down earlier with the support of the Nissenbaum Family Foundation and Rabbi Akiva Leiman and his students.
On July 10, the cemetery markers were unveiled. The ceremony was attended by about 70 people, including descendants of Jews from Szczuczyn, including Poland’s Chief Rabbi, Michael Schudrich, Paul Walsky, and Laurence Walsky.
Marking the cemetery boundaries was sponsored and supported by: Bob and Barbara Roswell in memory of Max Ruda, Sanford & Gabrielle Kuvin Foundation, Michael Marvins, Rabbi Michael Schudrich, Paul Walsky, Association of the Jewish Historical Institute of Poland, National Heritage Board, Friends of Jewish Heritage in Poland.
Stone markers were designed by the Formy Wspólne Foundation and produced by Magdalena Olszowska.
Thanks to funds from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, FODŻ intends to replace the communist-era monument which falsely attributes the 1941 pogrom solely to the Germans. Another challenge will be to restore the former pre-burial house and to maintain the plant life which threatens to engulf the area again.
In order to foster dialogue with the local residents, FODŻ has asked the Szczuczyn City Council to publish information about the history of the local Jewish community on the Szczuczyn.pl website. The Foundation, together with POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews has also proposed to organize various educational activities for young people.
